🛡️ The Reason: Google’s 7-Day Security Delay
Google has a built-in security feature designed to protect you from hackers. When a sensitive change is made (like changing a recovery phone number), Google continues to allow the old number to receive codes for 7 full days.
This is because if a hacker gained access to your account and changed your number, the 7-day delay gives the real owner (you) time to use the old number to revert the changes and secure the account.
🛠️ How to Resolve This Issue
1. The Patience Method (Recommended)
In most cases, you simply need to wait. After 7 consecutive days, Google’s system will automatically stop using the old number and switch entirely to the new one. Avoid making any further security changes during this week to prevent resetting the timer.
2. Update "Two-Step Verification" Specifically
Sometimes, users update the "Recovery Number" but forget to update the "Two-Step Verification" (2FA) settings.
Go to Google Account > Security.
Under "How you sign in to Google," click on 2-Step Verification.
Ensure your new number is the one listed as the "Voice or text message" default.
3. Use Backup Codes
If you can still access your account on another device, generate Backup Codes. This allows you to sign in without needing any phone number at all while you wait for the 7-day update period to end.
